This work began as a series of photographs
of interior spaces that interested me: attics, basements, stairwells
– always empty of people, always dark, silent, disquieting.
I like placing the viewer in the dark, looking into a lighted area
beyond.
I use color lasers of these photographs
to form the basis of a collage glued to mat board. I then add other
images and textures (old drawings, fabric, acrylic sand, cut up
canvasses) to build up a rich layer which is then reworked with
sandpaper, oil paint, oil stick, colored pencil and Citrasolve.
Once the above has been completed, I mount each one on board.
The result is to transform the “raw
materials” of the photograph, fabric etc. into a more abstract
and personal evocation of the original space.
Note: The events of September 11 have had a deep affect on these
paintings and how I now see buildings and structures in general.
