Artist Statement ~ Gateway Series
My work focuses on a bringing together of disparate images that, when reconciled, tell a story about larger issues. I am intrigued by the evocative power of ordinary objects and places to speak to these larger concerns. As a painter I am also interested in making surfaces that hold one’s attention and draw you into the space much in the same way as the touch of the original objects do.

The work begins with photographs of cluttered homes, unfinished projects, building restorations and abandoned spaces. I make a collage of these images and then work back into the surface with sandpaper, oil paint, pencil and solvent to build up a rich layer of imagery evocative of the original place. As I work I have the strong impression that I am rebuilding from the ground up - using all the once disparate elements to make a new whole.
