“Renovation” Series
2004

Artist Statement

I am drawn to objects whose time has almost expired: they are about to be demolished, discarded, or simply worn by age.

Working from my photos of ruins, excavations and restoration projects underway, I look for exposed pipes, lath, and half-plastered walls, even the scaffolding around them that hides as well as defines a particular space.

In my work with fabric (making quilts for a weaver from his scraps), I see the changes in color and texture of his life’s work. These fragments often form the raw material for a painting: the leftover shapes from cutting out a jacket pattern, the backing material with bits of silk still stuck to it.

As I work I have the strong impression that I am rebuilding from the ground up – using all the once disparate elements to make a new whole.
