Artist Statement ~
Renovation Series
I am drawn to objects whose time has almost expired: they have been demolished, discarded, or simply worn thin by age. Working from my photos of ruins, unfinished projects and excavations, I look for exposed pipes, lath, and half-plastered walls, even the scaffolding around a project that hides as well as defines a particular space.
In my work with fabric (making quilts for a weaver from his scraps), I see the changes in color and texture of his life’s work. These fragments often form the raw material for a painting: the left over shapes from cutting out a jacket pattern, the backing material with bits of silk still stuck to it. In my work as a personal organizer I seek out the chaos of a life and the history hidden in the layers. And from these disparate elements I build a new structure that brings a sense of order to what I have seen.
